Description
URSA MAJOR means “great bear” or “the larger bear” in Latin. It is the largest northern constellation and the third largest constellation in the sky. There are many tales and legends associating Ursa Major with bears and Greek mythology associates it with Callisto, a nymph who was turned into a bear by Hera, Zeus’s jealous wife. Its brightest star is called Alioth and its seven brightest stars form the famous Big Dipper asterism. It was first catalogued in the 2nd century by Greek astronomer Ptolemy.
