Description
SCUTUM means “shield” in Latin and it was named after the shield of the warrior-hero Sobieski, in honor of King John III Sobieski of Poland, who successfully defended Vienna against the Ottoman Empire in 1683. It is the fifth smallest constellation in the sky and its brightest star is Alpha Scuti. Scutum was originally introduced by Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius in the 17th century.
