Description
PAVO means “peacock” in Latin. In Greek mythology, it is associated with the goddess Hera, the wife of Zeus - she drove through the air in a chariot drawn by peacocks. They were considered sacred birds, believed to have been created from the eyes of the giant Argus after he was slain by Hermes. Its brightest star is Peacock (Alpha Pavonis). This constellation was first catalogued by Dutch navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman during their exploration of the southern hemisphere in the late 16th century.
