Description
CETUS derives from the Greek word for "whale" or "sea monster." In Greek mythology, it represents the sea monster sent by Poseidon to devour Andromeda, the daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia. Andromeda escaped because she was rescued by Perseus, who later became her husband. The brightest star in this constellation is Mira and it was first catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century.
