Description
The letter A is thought to have originated from the Phoenician letter aleph, which was a picture of an ox's head. The Phoenicians were a Semitic people who lived in what is now Lebanon, Syria, and Israel. They developed the first alphabet, which was a system of writing that used 22 consonants. The Greeks adopted the Phoenician alphabet and added vowels. The Romans then adopted the Greek alphabet and added a few more letters. The modern English alphabet is based on the Roman alphabet.
