Description
The "mora" in Slavic mythology is a nocturnal evil spirit that sits on sleeping individuals' chests, sucking their blood. It was thought to originate from the soul of a female child born in a bloody amniotic sac or a girl who made a pact with the devil. According to belief, the "mora" could only exist in this form until marriage, after which she would become a witch. While incapable of killing, the "mora" could only torment people during their sleep. The belief persists, and we still use the expression "noćna mora" (nightmare) for a bad dream.
